Daughter of Thaddeus (1806-1876) and Emily Maria (Kellogg) Welles, niece of Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. Mary Jane Welles Peabody was a descendent of Rev. Thomas Hooker who was the governor of Connecticut. She married Rev. Douglass Cairnes Peabody after the death of his first wife. They had two children in addition to two children from Rev. Peabody's first marriage. Mary Jane is mentioned in a letter dated May 13th, 1861, written by Anna M. Seward, and addressed to Francis Adeline Seward.
