Biography

William Winthrop was the US Consul to Malta when William Henry Seward visited on September 8, 1859. Mr. Winthrop had served at Trieste and Tunis before Malta, where he served from 1834 until his death in 1869. He was an active Freemason and a commander in the order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.  His parents are James Andrews and Sarah Winthrop, but he dropped his paternal later in life. He married Emma Curtis, daughter of Sir William Curtis, Bart. shortly after arriving in Malta.
