Biography

Sir John Gaspard Le Marchant was Governor of Malta when William Henry Seward visited in 1859. He writes that he parted with the governor and the consul on September 8 "with much regret." Le Marchant was born in England, joined the military and spent his career serving the British abroad. He married Margaret Anne Taylor on May 28, 1839. He served in Cape Colony, was appointed lieutenant governor of Newfoundland in 1846, lieutenant governor of Nova Scotia in 1852, governor of Malta in 1859, and commander-in-chief of Madras in 1865. He retired to England in 1868.
