Biography

Charon is the mythical escort that ferries earthly dead across the River Styx into Hades in the Greek tradition. He appears in Virgil's "Aeneid" and in later works by Greek poets. William Henry Seward references Charon in his September 3, 1859 travel letter, which describes Lake Avernus. The lake is often associated with Greek mythology about Hades, the underworld.
