Biography
Francis II was the son of Francis I, the first Austrian Emperor, and Marie-Louise. He was married first to Elizabeth Wurttemberg, who died in childbirth. He then married, Maria Teresa, daughter of Ferdinand, King of Naples. After Maria Teresa died in 1807 he married Maria Ludovica Beatrix of Este. After Maria died, Francis married Carolina August of Bavaria.
In 1792, Francis became the last Holy Roman Emperor. From 1792 — 1797 he led the empire in war against France. In 1797, he signed the peace of Campo Formio. In 1806, Francis "ceased to be a German emperor, and became the first emperor of Austria." Yet, at the Congress of Vienna (1814-1815), Austria regained much of the territory lost in the previous few decades during war.
