Biography

Metternich was born in 1773. In 1801 he began working as a foreign ambassador for Austria, serving as the foreign minister to France. After France's loss in the Napoleonic Wars, Metternich helped create the quadruple alliance of great powers, between Austria, Prussia, Russia, and Great Britain. Metternich was an enemy of liberalism and nationalism. In 1820, he helped suppress nationalist uprisings in Italy and in the 1820s he also suppressed nationalist and liberal uprisings in Germany. In 1830, he suppressed uprisings in Germany and Italy, and wanted to invade France to "defeat the insurrectionists." But, the Austrian empire did not have the power to launch an assault on France. During the 1848 revolutions, support for Metternich waned, and, under public and imperial pressure, Metternich resigned.
