Biography

Emanuel Masseras was known to the Seward family as the editor of Courier des Etats-Unis, a French language newspaper in New York City. Born in France in 1823, he came to the United States and lived much of his life here. He returned to France at least three times (1853, 1859, and sometime before 1899). During his 1859 visit, Masseras and William Henry Seward visited the editor of La Patrie, a French publication, along with Mr. Henry Jarvis Raymond of the New York Times. Mr. Masseras died in Paris in late October 1899, but the date of death remains unclear.
