Biography

Henry Milman was a historian and Dean of the St. Paul's. He was born in London and then educated at Greenwich and then at Eton College and Brasenose College at Oxford. His performance at Oxford was impressive, and he won several awards. He became a fellow, then professor of poetry, then a cleric. He edited several translations of historical epic poems before being appointed canon of Westminster, then rector of St. Margaret's. He became dean of St. Paul's in 1849, which is the capacity in which William Henry Seward knew him: he writes in his June 21, 1859 letter that he had heard "a sermon by the Reverend Dr. Milman." 

Milman counted Sydney Smith among the friends that he, his wife Mary Ann Cockell, and their six children entertained often.
