Biography

Joseph Stemmings Copes was born in Delaware in 1811. He graduated from the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1833. He moved to Mississippi and helped found the first Mississippi State Agricultural Society. In 1849, he moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. During his career he served as the President of the Mississippi State Medical Society, Administrator of the University of Louisiana, and President of the New Orleans Academy of Science.
