Biography
Rufus Gilbert is mentioned by Fanny Adeline Seward in her diary of 1862-1863 as one of several introduced during her trip with the "Carrie Martin" boat. He was a surgeon during the Civil War before becoming interested in "rapid transit;" he incorporated a railway company with pneumatic propulsion but later was ousted by his partners. He suffered from ill-health throughout his life.
