Biography

Major Charles Burgess is mentioned in a letter written by William Seward, Jr. They served together in the 9th artillery from Auburn, NY. He was married to Louisa, with whom he had three children - all born before he served in the Civil War. Their names were Louisa, Charles, and Flora. He enlisted in 1862, was promoted to Major in 1864, and was discharged in 1865. He and his wife lived with their daughter Louisa's family in Veron, IN until the end of their lives.
