Minister of First Congregational Church of New York City, during the American Civil War he served as President of the United States Sanitary Commission. Bellows helped establish the National Conference of Unitarian Churches in 1865. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary when recalling how a guest received one of his sermons.
