Biography

Born in New York. Graduated from Harvard University.  Enlisted as a private in the NY 12th Militia during the American Civil War. His performance after the Battle at Antietam led to his quick promotion within the army. Fanny Seward references him in her 1862-1863 diary relative to a conversation she has with Lieut. Edward Walter West about promotion. West is of the opinion that Barlow is deserving of the rank.
