Biography

Prosperous farmer and ship freighter from Claverack, NY.  Owned several boats used during the American Civil War by the U.S. government, including the "Carrie Martin" and the "M. Martin." Fanny Seward references in her 1862-1863 diary riding in the "Carrie Martin" during a visit with her father to the troops at Yorktown and surrounding area and meeting the Captain, "Martin by name."
