Biography
French diplomat and statesman whose belligerent attitudes as foreign minister in 1870 helped push France, then diplomatically isolated and militarily unprepared, into a disastrous war with Prussia. Gramont was a member of an old aristocratic family. He served with some merit in a variety of diplomatic posts during the Second Empire. He supported French intervention in Italy in 1860 and urged a French–Austrian alliance to head off Prussia.
