Biography

Born in Greene Country, Georgia. Trained as an attorney but established a plantation near Montgomery, Alabama. Elected Governor of Alabama in 1841 as a Democrat for two terms. Completed two senate terms for others and was elected Senator of Alabama in 1855.  Retired from politics at the start of the Civl War. Frances "Fanny" Seward references him attempting to maintain order in the Senate in her 1860 diary.
