Biography
Ellen Douglas Grosvenor Cushing was the daughter of Judge Thomas P. Grosvenor of Buffalo, New York. Ellen was mentioned directly by William Henry Seward's adopted daughter, Olive Risely, in 1868. Olive mentioned to William Henry Seward that she paid her uncle, Thomas P. Grosvenor, a visit and was happy to see her younger cousin, Ellen. Olive's visit was contemporary to Ellen's marriage to Milton Cushing, Jr., who served in the Navy during the American Civil War. The two were married in 1869 and were considered sweethearts by those who knew them. Milton died in 1887 at Dunkirk, New York, of Tuberculosis (TB). Ellen passed away almost a decade later in 1898.
