Mary Eliza Babbitt Cushman was born in 1794 to Erasmus and Mary (Saunders) Babbitt in Sturbridge, Massachusetts. In 1815, she married Elkanah Cushman of Boston. With Elkanah, she had six children, three of whom survived into adulthood, including the celebrated actress Charlotte Cushman. After her husband's death in 1841, Mary moved to England with her daughter Charlotte where she died in 1865 and was subsequently buried.
