Biography

Sebastián Lerdo de Tejada was the President of Mexico from 1872-1876. He served in serveral positions within the Mexican government, but was driven into exile due to political tensions after his presidency ended. He died in New York City in 1889. 

There are serveral letters between the Sewards and Lerdo in the larger papers collection, and it is possible he met the Sewards during their trip to Mexico.
