Biography

Cave Johnson was born in Tennessee and attended Cumberland College where he studied the law. He entered legal practice in Clarksville, TN and then entered local and state politics. From 1829-1837 and from 1839-1845, he served as a U.S. representative for Tennessee in Congress. He was appointed Postmaster General from 1845-1849. Johnson spent the remainder of his life in state and national politics.
