Biography
Charles Broadnax Maury was born in Caroline County, Virginia, to William Grimes and Anne (Woolfolk) Maury. He moved to Washington, D.C. at the age of fifteen and clerked for his brother John W. Maury until 1848. Maury then opened a bookshop and stationary office with Taylor Hudson on Pennsylvania Avenue. The business appears to have done some government printing. In 1861, Maury moved his business south. In her 1858-1859 diary, Frances "Fanny" Seward references making a stop in their store to buy "note paper, etc."
