Tristam Burgess Jr. was a state senator for Rhode Island, and then led Rhode Island troops as a Colonel during the Civil War. He died from battlefield wounds in 1863. He and his son Richard James Burgess are mentioned in a letter dated June 22nd 1861 from Francis Wayland to Frances Miller Seward.
