Biography
William Augustus Muhlenberg was a leading Episcopal priest during the 1800s. He is best known for his work on education reform and for founding St. Luke's Hospital in New York City (now known as Mount Sinai Morningside). Muhlenberg served as the hospital superintendent for St. Luke's from its founding in 1850 until his death.
In Fanny Seward's 1858-1859 diary she writes that Sarah Hance was going to New York City in order to have her hand examined at St. Luke's; however, she incorrectly identifies Muhlenberg as a doctor.
