Biography
Tongzhi Emperor, or Aisin Gioro, was the son of Xianfeng Emperor and Lady Yehenara. He ascended to the throne of China at the age of six and was assigned numerous councilors to assist the young boy in his duties. His mother, Lady Yehenara, seized considerable control of the throne and Aisin attempted to lessen his mother's influence shortly before he succumbed from small pox at the age of 18. His rule coincided with an important period of internal conflict, including the Taiping Rebellion, the Nien Rebellion, a Muslim rebellion in Yunnan Province, and the Miao Rebellion. George Frederick Seward references his army in a letter written to his uncle, William H. Seward, then Secretary of State, dated March 07, 1863.
