Biography
Edward Cunningham was an international merchant employed with the firm Russell & Co, the largest American trading company in China during the mid 19th century. He served as a US Vice Consul in Shanghai from 1851 to 1854. He also served on the board of the Shanghai Municipal Council of the International Settlement beginning in 1854 and was elected its chairman in 1868. When in the United States, he lived in Milton, Massachusetts. He is referenced in a letter written by George Frederick Seward to his uncle, then Secretary of State, William H. Seward, dated January 19, 1864, in which he solicits his uncle for a job for Mr. Cunningham.
