Biography
Sarah Chase was born to Quaker parents Anthony and Lydia Chase of Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1862, she and her sister Lucy Chase traveled south to teach in schools for formerly enslaved men, women, and children. She continued to teach in freedman's schools after the war, until her health forced her to retire in 1867. Emily Howland references either her or her sister Lucy in a letter written to Frances Miller Seward, dated March 22, 1864, in which she mentions the horse of "Miss Chase at Norfolk."
