Biography

Lucy Chase was born to Quaker parents Anthony and Lydia Chase of Worcester, Massachusetts. In 1862, she and her sister Sarah Chase traveled south to teach in schools for formerly enslaved men, women, and children. She continued to teach in freedman's schools in Virginia and Florida after the war, until she retired in 1869. Emily Howland references either her or her sister Sarah in a letter written to Frances Miller Seward, dated March 22, 1864, in which she mentions the horse of "Miss Chase at Norfolk."
