Biography
Elizabeth Abercrombie Vertner was born in Pennsylvania and married Daniel Vertner in 1827. The couple resided in Lexington, Kentucky, When the Civil War broke out, their home was occupied by Union Army Officers who damaged the property and its contents. Elizabeth Vertner petitioned the U.S. Government for redress. Henry Onderdonk Chesebro wrote a letter to William H. Seward, dated March 30, 1864, explaining her situation and asking him to forward her concerns on to the appropriate parties. Vertner sold the house the following year.
