Edward Livingston

Biography
Edward Livingston was born in Clermont, New York and attended the College of New Jersey (Princeton). He studied law with Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr. Livingston was elected to U.S. Congress and served from 1795-1801 (New York) and from 1823-1829 (Louisiana). He was elected to the U.S. Senate for Louisiana in 1829 and resigned in 1831 to become President Andrew Jackson's Secretary of State. From 1833-1835, Livingston served as the U.S. Minister to France. Livingston is referenced in a letter written by Samuel Sweezey Jr. to his uncle William H. Seward, dated May 26, 1864, in connection with an investigation into the behavior of General Edward Ord.
