Biography

Richard Hoffman Coolidge was born in Poughkeepsie, New York, the son of Catherine A. Hoffman and Daniel Coolidge. Coolidge served as the Assistant United States Army Surgeon from 1841 to 1860 when he was promoted to Surgeon. He was a medical inspector through the American Civil War. Frances "Fanny" Seward references his death in her 1866 diary, telling how Dr. Basil Norris helped arrange the funeral.
