Marie Elise Gutman Blair McKay was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Andrew and Ada Gutman. She was married first to James Holmes Blair in 1887 with whom she had one child, George Blair. After his death, she was remarried to Robert John McKay in 1904. Frances "Fanny" Seward references her as the "little daughter" of the Gutmans in her 1866 diary.
