Biography
Joseph Pearson Smith Jr. was the eldest son of Joseph Pearson Smith and Mary Alef (Cooper) Smith of Wadesboro, North Carolina and Spartanburg, South Carolina. Joseph's parents purchased Millie and Christine McKoy, twin conjoined girls, as an investment on their celebrity in the 1850s. After his father's death in 1862, his mother assumed ownership and then guardianship over the girls. Frances "Fanny" Seward references meeting him while in Washington, DC, in her 1866 diary.
