Catherine M. Melville was born in Scotland. She opened schools for young children in Macon, Georgia in 1856 and Washington, D.C. in 1860 with Elizabeth Jane Gay. After the American Civil War, she served as a clerk in the U.S. Treasury Office. According to the 1880 U.S. Federal Census for Washington, D.C., Melville was living with her friend "Eliza" Elizabeth Jane Gay. Frances "Fanny" Seward references her in her 1866 diary as a passenger on a tour aboard a transport ship called the "Ascutney."
