Biography

Elizabeth Beersheba (Allen) Dyer was born in Missouri and married Alexander Byrdie Dyer, a West Point graduate and career military soldier. The couple moved to Springfield, Massachusetts, at the start of the American Civil War where Elizabeth's husband served as Commandant of the Springfield Arsenal. In 1864, he was promoted to Brigadier General and Chief of Ordinance and the couple moved to Washington, DC where they remained for the rest of their lives. Frances "Fanny" Seward recalls Mrs. Dyer calling on their Washington, D.C. home in her 1866 diary.
