Biography

Seth Green was born March 19, 1817, a son of Adonijah Green and Betsy Bronson Green. He grew up in Carthage, New York and attended school until sixth grade. He became a commercial fisherman and had a fish market business with his brother, Monroe Green, in Rochester, New York. Seth studied fish
reproduction to try to replenish populations of marketable supplies of fish. In 1864, he started the Caledonia Fish Hatchery on Spring Creek, in Caledonia, New York. His technique of dry impregnation was so successful, he became known as the Father of Fish Culture. He was famous not only in the United
States but also Europe. His methods were used to raise fish that were stocked privately and in public waters. The Department of Environmental Conservation continues to stock fish in New York State, reared in the Caledonia Fish Hatchery, and it is the oldest hatchery in the country. Seth Green died from pneumonia and a cutter accident on August 18, 1888. He is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery, Rochester, New York.
