Biography
Edward Henry Avery was born in Columbus, New York on August 18, 1824. He graduated from Yale College and passed the bar becoming a lawyer in 1844. He practiced law in Bath, NY for three years, then moved to Auburn, NY joining a law firm there. In 1852, Avery married Susan Sophia Taylor, of Brooklyn, New York. The couple had 4 children - Gustavus Taylor, Martha Read, James Carrington, and Charles Irving. Avery was very involved in the business and social community serving as the President of the Auburn Water Works and Auburn Gas Light Company, Director of the Empire Telephone Company, Cayuga County Savings Bank, Auburn Paper Company, and Auburn Wagon Works. In 1883, he became President of the National Bank of Auburn. He was a trustee of the First Presbyterian Church in Auburn. He died May 5, 1908.
