Biography

William Elias Avery was born in Farmer, Seneca County, New York on July 29, 1838, to John Barber Avery and Elizabeth (Starkweather) Avery. He joined the 75th New York Infantry on November 26, 1861, as a 1st Lieutenant. He was killed during the siege of Port Hudson, Louisiana on May 27, 1863. He is buried in Lake View Cemetery, Interlaken, Seneca County, New York. In a letter dated June 14, 1863 to her father William H. Seward, Frances "Fanny" Seward recounts Avery's death "bravely leading on his men" and his status as "a favorite member of the 75th Regiment."
