My dear Henry
Holding a small note and some other
unsettled business against the Estate of the late Edward
Ely
which I could see no cause I took occasion
yesterday to press the propriety of closeing those
accts of H. Elliott
he observed that this business would have
been long since settled had it ^not^ been for
the circumstance of your in a [ jocost ]

taking his watch saying that he did
not use it and you would — and that
you had never returned it or made
any compensation for it — This was
all new to me — and I mention it
now not to call back the flight of youthfull
by gone days — But simply to know
wheather the facts were as above
stated — whether no compensation
had been made and if so what in
your judgment was the true
value of article — Mrs Ely seems to
make it a sene qua non that it must
be paid for and I wish to know the
right of the matter in order to adjust
my business with the Estate — Please
answer this
