Canandaigua Sep 5 1838
Dear Seward
I have been jaunting about the country hither &
thither for the last fortnight and with all laboring
under the effects of a severe cold: Last week I attended
court at Pen Yan: Yates County will do well in the
coming election: and our friends there are confident of
a majority: upon a particular question: I think there
is no decided opinion to be formed: but upon the whole
we may as well esteem it adverse to our wishes: I returned
from Wayne circuit last evening. and while there I was
gratified and somewhat disappointed to learn that
within a few days new light had had broken in upon
the vision of our friends: Sibley

& us. and he says they are all right
that is they entertain somewhat different views from
those heretofore entertained: The leading men of that
county have been inclined to Bradishs
Birth: 1783-09-15 Death: 1863-08-30
interest: but
I now think they will pause before they commit them-
selves fully on this point. Sibley will do all he can
and he can do more and do it better in this respect
than anybody else - Taylor

will have a talk
with G and I think he will be found not the worst
man for our side. I find our folks here ^on the other side^ are
relying on certain intelligence from Auburn: & it
must deceive them and lead them astray: there

will be an effort to carry over the Granger

force to Bradish
how can we prevent it? from the character of the Auburn
delegates I believe the attempt will be useless:
What is the certain character of the NY dele-
gation. do let me know the result in all the counties as far
as heard from: Cataraugus is right. Asher Tyler
