Alvah Worden - This distinguished individual died at his residence in Canandaigua on Saturday, the 16th inst. after a long and painful illness, in the 59th year of his life. In his legal profession, he was ranked among the first in the state. In 1835, he entered into co-partnership with Mark H. Sibley, in the practice of the law. Mr. Worden has represented the people of this county several times in our Legislature, was elected in 1846 a delegate to revise the State Constitution, and afterwards appointed one of the three commissioners to simplify the code of this state. In his death, the people of this county lose one of their most distinguished citizens.
Although in his obituary, Alvah is heralded as a beneficial and contributing member of society, his other reputation is rather disparaging. Frances Seward never got along well with Worden because he abused (we aren't sure of the extent of this abuse) Frances Chesbro (his daughter) and Lazette. Lazette often appeals to Frances for help from Worden in her letters. References in the family correspondence suggest that Worden was violent and a poor money manager.
