Sunday night –
My dear Sister,
I was in a state of considerable tribu-
lation when Worden

left last Wednesday morning – Henry

Unknown
invasion &c – were quite over-
whelming – Henry continued quite sick through the
day – Dr. Williams
Birth: 1812-05-12 Death: 1882
administered calomel and salts
the next day he was so much better as to leave
his room and receive the guests invited to supper
in the evening – since then he has attended to his
usual business but is not yet well – Mr
Birth: 1787-08-11 Death: 1869-06-20
and
Mrs Cary
Birth: 1788 Death: 1863-06-22

health had very much improved – she desired to
be kindly remembered to you when I wrote – They
expected to reach Batavia this morning – Adeline
Unknown

and Gurnee are still here – the weather has been
so unpleasant that Adeline has not been out
until yesterday – then it rained most of day –
no it was Friday she spent the day with a Mrs

Johnson
Birth: 1794-11-07 Death: 1862-06-13
whose husband
Birth: 1790-01-02 Death: 1875-02-26
is in the Assembly – They are
boarding at the Clinton house – some connexion of
Gurnee’s – Yesterday she went to the capital in com-
pany with the said Mrs Johnson – and spend this
evening with her again – They think of returning
some time this week – I went out with Mrs Cary
to make calls Friday after attending church but
she was so unwell that we came home after going
to Mrs Horners
Birth: 1813 Death: 1873-04-29
– In the evening I went much against
my inclination to one of Mrs. Benedicts
Birth: 1806 Death: 1874-09-26
dull parties –
composed mostly of members wives – a card came
for you also which you can have whenever you wish.
Mr
Birth: 1810-06-14 Death: 1886-03-24
and Mrs Hunt
Birth: 1819-04-01 Death: 1846-05-17
were there, they desired to be
remembered to you – Mrs Hunt asked me if I thought
Mr Foster
Birth: 1800-05-07 Death: 1889-05-11
resembled her brother John
Unknown
as some wise
person has discovered a similarity in their appearance
I told her I never had heard a more absurd idea –
Whittlesey
Birth: 1799-06-12 Death: 1851-09-19
has been here he left yesterday morning in
company with the Cary's – We all went to Church this
morning – That is the Gurnee's Henry Underwood

and the
boys

Sam Blatchford
Birth: 1820-03-09 Death: 1893-07-07
is still here – I don't know but he will stay
the remainder of the session – he is so vacillating – seems
to have given up all idea of going West for the present – I am
told that Weed has engaged him to stay two months and
assist in editing the Journal – Miss Spencer
Birth: 1789-02-23 Death: 1868-10-10
is at Congress
Hall – I wonder if he would not find it an equally agreeable
tavern if he should try it – I have been very uncomfortable
about Augustus
Birth: 1826-10-01 Death: 1876-09-11
since Henry returned from West Point –
The boys are confined to the school room ten hours each
day – I believe I have written this before – you will thus
perceive how much it troubles me – Dont mention it to
Clara
Birth: 1793-05-01 Death: 1862-09-05
— Adeline says Clara is not well – I do wish
Pa
Birth: 1772-04-11 Death: 1851-11-13
could come here that she might have some relaxation
I think he would have come with the Gurnee’s with a
little persuasion – If Henry Underwood ever should go
home (which he very much desires) I think Pa would
return with him – Clara wrote me a short letter by Adeline –
Henry has rented this house until a year from next
May – he did this last Winter – he will stay here
as usual next Summer and of course until the 1st of Jan –
I do not think he has any settled plan for the
future though he has many schemes – I shall go home
as early as I can but that probably will not be very early
I hope you have not forgotten that you promised to come
down in April – To say nothing of myself it would
be cruel to disappoint my boys – Augustus I presume
will spend part of his vacation at Auburn – I hope Clara
will be able to come down in the Spring – I think it would
do her good – but she will prefer to be at home when Augustus
is there – perhaps she will return with him – I suppose
his father intends sending him back to that school – I hardly
know what I ought to do – Henry thinks I would not be
satisfied any way – it is hard to have a child away from
home especially when you feel that they are made
uncomfortable – Monday morning – Sleep overpowered me
last night so that I was unable to finish my letter—This
is a fine bright morning – I go with Adeline to see the
town though I do not feel very well – Have you read
Dickens
Birth: 1812-02-07 Death: 1870-06-09
speech at the Hartford dinner – it was beautiful
that at New York is said to be still better – I have not seen
it yet – Greeley
Birth: 1811-02-03 Death: 1872-11-29
has set me a private copy of his
address which I shall keep for your perusal – it is
Page 4

very good – I received a letter from Dr. Canfield
Birth: 1798-11-26 Death: 1865-01-05
a few
days ago saying he hoped Henry had written a favorable
and satisfactory answer to Gov Lincolns
Birth: 1782-10-25 Death: 1868-05-29
enquires – modest!
Another supper Friday – When the men are all entertained my
turn will come I suppose – I shall give a large party
though the people all seem to think it a matter of course
The River is closed again below Hudson – Dickens goes
to Philadelphia and Washington
