Biography

Trumbull Cary was born on August 11, 1786 , son of Ebenezer and Sara (Trumbull) Cary of Mansfield, Connecticut. Cary moved to Western New York (Batavia) before 1812.

Cary served as the Postmaster of Batavia for 20 years and was one of the founders of the Genesee Bank, for which he served as director for over 20 years. Cary was a member of the New York State Assembly in 1828 and the Senate from 1831 to 1834. He became the New York State Bank Commissioner in 1840 and served until 1843.

Cary married Margaret Brisbane in 1817. Together they had four children: a son named Walter, two daughters, both christened Elizabeth Ann Cary, who died as infants, one in 1823 and then the second in 1824, and another son named Trumbull, "Trummy," who died as a toddler in 1832. Cary and his wife Margaret were close personal friends of William and Frances Seward. 

Trumbull Cary died on June 20, 1869, at the age of 82.
