My dearest Sister,
I received your letter yesterday
morning- this weather is dismal enough-I
think the prospect of going to Romulus is
rather dull for Clara. Monday Henry was trying
all day to get away but did not succeed
John C. Spencer was here—Henry insisted upon my
sending some grapes to his wife which I was
not particularly anxious to do as I care nothing
about her and had sealed the said grapes
and put them away to try the experiment of
keeping them a month or two-thus the grapes
were withered and hardly worth transportation.
Teusday we were all invited to Mrs Porters to
tea Clara, Mc Clallen, and I went-there were
about twenty there but I was not “in the ”
and did not enjoy it—Mrs Hills e appeared
all in white—it is astonishing how the love of
dress will predominate over all other feelings-
we came home at ten found Henry still engaged
with company-he awoke about six the next
morning and declared his intention to take
the car at 7—of course I was pretty much
hurried to get his clothes ready. I received
a letter from him last night dated Thursday
he had just arrived at Albany—was going down
the river Friday or Saturday-writes nothing new.
He will probably return some time next this week

Clara called at Mrs Millers’ Wednesday afternoon
Mrs Yates was there to tea-they had all been
invited to Mrs Porters to tea but when they dis-
covered that we were there the night previous
felt considerably incensed that they were
invited at all — how absurd — just as if one
could see the whole village at one time.
The next day Maria came here with a most
rueful countenance. Molly had arrived at
Isaacs which made her exceedingly unhappy
as she presumed Molly did not intend coming
to see her - she said she would call at Isaacs
but was afraid Molly would refuse to see her.
I told her I thought not, but as she seemed to feel
so unhappy I tal told her we should call the next
day and I could easily ascertain whether
Molly wanted to see her — she went home in the
same uncomfortable state of feeling. The next morning
soon after breakfast Molly came to spend the
day with us. I asked her if she did not
propose to go and see Maria-I believe she was
not very well pleased that I made the inquiry
said Maria had treated her so ill that she
should never forget it (she might have added
or forgive it either)—She then recapitulated
most many of the same circumstances which
she has told me before-they were bad enough
and finally concluded by saying she never desired
to meet her again. I told her that Maria felt unhappy
about it but this made no difference. She is all
Miller strong in her prejudices and not easily
entreated— I felt that my duty extended no
further any further interference would be officiousness

Abijah should have left Molly a legacy the neglecting
to do so was very wrong. Maria should have
supplied what he neglected but her extreme selfishness
probably never allowed her to think of a thing
that would have been a matter of course with
a more generous woman. I think this would
have softened all the hard feelings-as it is
Maria will keep tight purse strings and cry
because nobody loves her and Molly will probably
continue implacable. Maria was at Church
today exceedingly illnatured-grief never
kills people when they are affected in that way
when she gets so she can speak pleasantly I shall
tell her the result of my experiment as Molly
has no desire to have any thing concealed.
Marthy Jane Mary and Mary Foot and Emily
Burr all were here at tea Friday. Emily
is an illooking illbehaved spoilt girl of 14—
We expect them here again this evening—Molly
will probably return Tuesday. Yesterday Clara
and I took tea at Isaacs. Cobb keeps possession
of the house yet though he is continually promising
to leave it—he will not. Mc Clallen wishes to
move into Dr Pitneys old house now owned or rented
by a Mr Webb a tobacconist who married
Polly Hoffman. They are to board with the
occupants of the house. I think Clara has
hardly decided upon this yet-she talks some
of going to Romulus and some of moving. I have
not seen the article you refer to in the Commercial. I
have not seen a paper since Henry left. The feeling
with regard to Ambrose Spencer is in accordance
with the usual fickleness of popular sympathy—

Tell Frances Aunty is very much obliged to her for her
very pretty little letter it is well written an prettily
expressed. I wish my poor eyes would allow me
to answer it immediately. I must write a few lines to
Henry-my head aches badly—
I am sorry Worden paid our bill over again but it
cannot be hel helped—Freddy has commenced a letter to
Frances. We were sorry to hear she had been sick— Frances
