Mary Miller (Hollister)
Birth: 4-24-1785
Death: 4-17-1870
Nickname: Maria
RelationshipsBiography
Maria, who is sometimes mentioned in 1830s letters, is likely this person. This is evident in 18310207FMS_WHS when Frances writes "After I came home Clary went to
call on Serene and while she was absent Abijah and Maria came to make their annual visit . . . They are to stay with us to night and go to Isaacs in the morning" This context implies that Maria must be married to Abijah Jr which makes her Mary Hollister Miller.
Mary Hollister Miller was the owner of 24 South St. in Auburn from 1835 to 1870. Her husband Abijah Miller, was the cousin of Elijah Miller, the builder and owner of the Seward House at 33 South St. Her house at 24 (historic 25-see 1871 Richie map) ) South St. she shared with her nephew Samuel Titus and family for the majority of her life.
FMS references her as Mrs. Miller in a letter to LMW (18420703FMS_LMW)--it is clear that she is referencing this Mary Miller and not the other Mary/Maria Miller (Maria Rutger Jane Miller) because in the letter she also reference Mrs. Miller's sister, Mrs. Waterman, who is Phoebe Hollister Waterman. It is unclear whether FMS is always referencing Mary Hollister as Mrs. Miller, or if there are times she is referencing the other Mrs. Miller.
