Sunday April 2nd
My dear Anna
I am sorry
though not surprised to
hear you were ill when
you returned from
New York - shopping
is toilsome business,
and the variable state
of the weather produces colds[ . ]
Reason:
I have been expecting every
day to hear Fanny
confined with her throat[ . ]
Reason:
Will
while we were at breakfast
leaving New York last
evening. He looks thin
but says he is well.

Willie is afraid of his
Father yet but will soon
learn to know him.
I wish it were possible for
Will to remain at home
he is much needed
here. Mr Day
well but has been at
the bank since McDou-
-gall
to hear Freds
to improve though it is
slowly. I do not think
much is gained by trying
to hasten the progress of
nature. I received Fred’s
letter yesterday saying the
party had gone to City Point
We suppose they are home
again by this time.
We have the promise of an

early Spring. The garden is
now about as far advanced
as it was last year the
middle of April. I spent
an hour or so in it Saturday
with Nicholas
was at work for Aunty
I have no doubt Pisgah
is very pretty. I have not
been there yet, indeed I
have been outside of the
gate but twice, there
to see Aunty Miller
is unusually well this winter
at 83 the she walks to Church
every fine Sunday and still takes care of her own rooms.
She always inquires about
you & Fred. I do not
know until Fanny comes
what are your prospects
for the summer, but I
hope you may all be

be able to spend some time
here – if not together at
different times. Aunty
continues better - she walks
to Pisgah occasionally but I
think this is always exhausting
and injures her. She is to
go to her house this week[ . ]

from Augustus
write soon. I always intended
to thank you dear Anna for
making so pleasant a home
for Augustus. It is always a
great comfort to me to see
my children happy. Your
quick and nice perception of
the needs of others renders
your kindness doubly valuable[ . ]

you many years in health
to smooth the paths of
others, which is really
the only true happiness[ . ]
