Auburn November 12th
My dear J.
In the general joy which surrounds me, I am so conspicuous
a figure that as yet I am unable to devote any time to private
business. The excitement will soon pass by and then I shall bestow
undivided attention upon business affairs.
Enough has reached me from Chautauqua to satisfy us that
the generous citizens of that county have vindicated
To defend; to justify; to support or maintain as true or correct, against denial, censure, or objection • To assert; to defend with success; to maintain • To defend with arms • To avenge; to punish •
me most
nobly. Aprise them wherever you meet them at home or abroad
in their houses or yours or by the way side, that I am grateful
for this verdict.
At this present writing’s date our townsmen are firing a salute of
One Hundred guns in honor of glorious Chautauqua.
I do not stop to give you details of the results of the e-
lections. It is certain that we have a majority in the Assembly,
and of the members of Congress and as we suppose six mem-
bers of the Senate. The majority for Governor and Lieutenant
Governor will be more than 10.000.
I intend to spend some two or three weeks with you some
time between this and the new year, but as yet unde-
cided when I will go to join you.
Frances

has been unwell since I last wrote but not
dangerously and is now able to sit up part of the day.
Our boys
