Auburn June 25th.1840.
My dear Jennings,
I have been a long time silent and I doubt not much to
your surprise. The Legislature adjourned leaving me with several weeks labor
but without the excitement which had sustained me during the winter. My
health gave way while I was seeking to effect my escape from Albany
to this place. A brief visit to Orange County which Frances
were bound to make and a stay of twelve days in New York which the
agitation of the Whig party rendered necessary delaying my return to Auburn
until now. I am here suffering much from ill health – but with the hope
of improvement by being at rest. I am not well enough to go thorugh the
fatigue of a journey, in the way I must necessarily travel, to Chautauqua,
and considerations of a political nature seem to render it inexpedient for
me to go abroad just now. Can you bring yourself to make a journey
in the month of June – I will await your arrival here – as I intend to spend
several weeks here – you will please bring along all the papers concerning
our affairs with this place – and I trust that I shall by the time you arrive

business so long and grievously neglected.
I saw Augustus
feel yourself hurried in coming here – my time is not contracted and I shall
find it convenient to wait your coming – And a little repose will be useful to me.
Your affectionate brother
