I cannot vote for the northern rail road. I believe in the
present condition of the moneyed world and of our own
State finances the undertaking of any new work of an
indefinite cert would seem to discredit us with capitalists
and create an opinion in the public mind that we
were legislating recklessly—
The friends of this road are treacherous
to one another. and blame us some of our friends
who have advocated the bill on the floor are against
its passage—
I have considered this subject openly
& I hope discretely – frankly stated my views to those
really anxious to pass the bill. and spoke in cau-
cus in a manner that they all personally
thanked me for my frankness. and I am on
right ground[ . ]
Reason: have told Beckwith
that I should vote for the bill. he believes it &
holds no acting only from a clear sense
of duty
My constituents are decidedly against
the bill. and it would be political death
to me to vote for it.
Truly
