Dear Father
When I left home last November
I thought that my ^mother
Academy next June; but recently she has changed her mind
of which I suppose you have been informed. She desires
me to commence studies in preparation for College,
thinking that it would be better for me.
But of all things, I had rather do most any one, instead
of going to college at the age I will be when prepared.
I am sure that you would be more pleased at my having
gone through the Academy at 20, than being one year
advanced in College; and I think Mother will also
when the time arrives. I am inclined to think
that one reason why she changed her mind is,
because she thought it was not a very good place
for morals; as to that matter I think there are
some in this school, as there are at most

boarding schools and colleges, that would
rank in wickedness with any in the academy.
I write for the purpose of soliciting you to procure
my appointment if it is in your power as my education
depends upon this step
Your affectionate son
A Seward
