Auburn March 11th 1844
My dear Son,
Your letter addressed to me at Albany has made me
very happy, for I have the utmost confidence in your fidelity to the
resolution you have adopted. The misfortunes of the past may
be turned to the improvement of the future– it is only by much experience
that we learn to choose the way of safety.
Major Delafield

thought you might find it difficult to
explain to your associates a desire for change– and this circumstance
like every other that relates to any difficulty attending you has
given your mother much alarm. I trust that the change has
been made in such a manner as to require no explanation.
But if it should prove otherwise this letter may be used to show
that no information of any kind yourself in any way
has ever reached me–

than usual.
Ever Your affectionate father
